because i have one of the best colleagues in the business, dana bash, she got the inside story. it is fascinating. one of the things i can't believe you're able to unearth is this anecdote about the 2008 campaign preps between mccain and obama. did rob portman -- is this true, did he get cyndi mccain to cry? >> he did. i don't think that was his intention, i know it wasn't, but he did. and the reason is because they were in debate prep, he was playing barack obama, and he was apparently so believable in his role as barack obama and more importantly so tough, hard hitting against his sparring partner, john mccain, that cindy mccain got very upset and ran crying out of the room. i talked to rob portman about that, he told me that story, and listen to what he said about why it is so important, to be so hard on his republican opponents in debate prep. >> part of your responsibility in these debates is to be tougher than your opponent. so that they -- the candidate you're helping is ready for the worst of it. so, you know, you have to be a little mean sometimes and kind of try to get

dana, that was really fascinating. interesting that you spoke to the republican strategist brad o'donnell, one of romney's primary debate here. he spent a lot of time with him during the primaries. how much does the romney think that those 20 or so debates in the primaries is going to help him win tonight? >> well, of course, any debate that any candidate has they think will help, but, you know, this is a very, very different ballgame. first of all, mitt romney was standing next to about half a dozen people at any given moment. this is mano-y-mano with the president of the united states. also, the tens of millions of viewers will be watching. it is a very different dynamic. that's why, interestingly, suzanne, this is the first time during this debate prep process which mitt romney started about a month ago during the democratic convention, the first time he has done these mock debates through all of those primaries. he never did a formal mac debate with what he called game day conditions. >> wow. that's really interest

dana bash, see you then. thank you very much. >>> the steady drumbeat to get u.s. troops out of afghanistan ahead of schedule is now getting louder. fueled in part by the deaths, murders of nato troops by afghans they are training, so-called green on blue attacks have claimed nearly 50 lives thus far this year. and the killings, they're taking a toll on the troops in the field. here is what nato's secretary-general told britain's guardian newspaper just this week. quoting here, quote, there is no doubt insider attacks have undermined trust and confidence, absolutely. the secretary-general told the guardian nato's withdraw could come sooner than expected and those attacks have also frustrated, angered those who lead the troops. just this past sunday general john alan, the isaf commander, voiced his frustration on "60 minute minutes". >> i'm mad as hell about them. we're going get after this. it reverberates everywhere, across the united states. we're willing to sacrifice a lot for this campaign, but we're not willing to be murdered for it. >> with the headline that

dana bash reporting live for us this morning. dan lothian is in denver, following the obama campaign. what has the president done for final preparations? >> well, he will be, this morning, going through the briefing books again, doing some final preparations and as you heard earlier, doing a walk-through later this afternoon of the venue. but the bulk of the work has happened over the last couple of days as a president was in nevada, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what t real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health

so the gal who has been all over this for us this week is our senior congressional correspondent dana bash. our guide to all these key, you know, senate races, and dana, i know today, you want to focus on the two senate races cause something surprising problems for both parties and that they have to defend turf they didn't expect to have to defend. talk to me about indiana first. >> that's right. that's a great example for republicans. it was a republican senate seat, has been held by richard lugar for decades. he is a moderate. and a tea party backed republican candidate, as he's mentioned, richard murdoch, won the republican primary and democrats have been pounding him as too conservative for the state, which is used to having senators from both parties who tend to work across party lines. he's running against a moderate democratic congressman who was really playing up his centrist credentials. and so this is a red state, but democrats really think they have an in because of their candidate. i want you to look at the two ads run by both campaigns, fascinating and telling because the

so senior congressional correspondent dana bash, she's joining me now and, dana, let's talk missouri here. because what we have told the todd akin, claire mccaskill story in the past, but given what he said, not necessarily an easy win for republicans now. >> that's right. it has been such a roller coaster for republicans, brooke. they went into this race months ago thinking that democrat claire mccaskill was so vulnerable that they were sure to win this seat. it was complicated by todd akin as you said, we talked about it a lot in this program. but the gist of what he said, which was so controversial, a woman's body has the ability to shut down pregnancy from rape. it can refuse to step aside, of course, and republicans who hammered him, begged him to get out of the race, are now in an uncomfortable position of having to eat crow. saying, well, he's better than the democrat. roy blunt, the current sitting senator from missouri. >> i think that anybody else would have been a candidate that clearly would have won and todd very well may win. he's on a ticket, at a time when people are
